Avuteq Stories: Evaldo finding his feet in Germany
May 27, 2015
At Avuteq we are proud to help candidates and want to highlight their successes. Choosing a new career, relocating to a different country and guiding yourself to happiness might be easier said than done and sometimes it is nice to see what others have gone through! The following interview is with Evaldo, a PHP Developer from Brazil. Evaldo relocated to Bamberg, Germany and started a whole new chapter in his career.
You moved from the buzzing city of São Paulo to picturesque Bamberg, how has this experience been so far? Anything surprising?
I lived in a city about 2 hours away from São Paulo and worked in São Paulo and the biggest problem was the time spent commuting every day. Now it takes me just a 10 minutes bike ride to go to the office and back home. This is something! Bamberg is a small town in Bavaria and the lifestyle here is very different from bigger cities like São Paulo. Life here is usually calm and less stressful than big cities.
What´s the best thing about your new role?
I have freedom to discuss and choose tools for new projects and I work with people from Germany and other countries. The cultural exchange is awesome.
Some people are concerned about bureaucracy and getting all the documents in order, how did this process go? Was it easier or more difficult than what you expected?
The German Consulate in Brazil asked for a lot of documents, that's true, but it was not so hard. When you have all the documents they ask for, the process is easy and doesn't take too much time. After coming to Germany the company helped me through the visa process.
What about the tech community in this small town, have you found like-minded individuals?
Bamberg is a small town and doesn't have too many IT companies, but it was a very nice surprise when I found out about Backspace (http://backspace-bamberg.de/), a hackerspace with lots of cool activities. If you come to Bamberg, try to visit the place.
As a speaker in Brazilian conferences you also submitted talks to European conferences and got one accepted for Bulgaria Web Summit. That's really exciting, how was it?
Bulgaria Web Summit was the first conference I attended in Europe and it was a very interesting experience. Rakuten sponsored me to attend the conference as a speaker. I wrote about the whole experience in my blog: http://blog.evaldojunior.com/conferences/talks/2015/04/23/bulgaria-web-summit-2015.html
Last but not least, which do you prefer, German beer vs Brazilian beer?
German beer, but it's totally Germany's fault, because they have a lot of beers here :) Let me explain: I was never a beer person, but I guess it's not possible to live in Germany and don't give German beer a try. Bamberg has a lot of breweries and you can taste some nice local beers in those places. The whole experience is very nice.
Every story is different, now it´s your turn! Have you also relocated for a new role? We´d love to hear about your experiences in the comments section below. Perhaps you are considering something new and would be interested in having a discussion about how we can help in your situation? Get in touch! Who knows, it might be your story we hear about next :)
